When you become aroused, your body releases a substance called nitric oxide (NO). In turn, levels of a chemical known as cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) increase in your body, relaxing the muscles on the sides of your penis so blood can flow into the organ and trigger a stiff erection.
While all this is happening, your body also compresses the veins that take blood away from the penis, so that the blood remains in place and you can maintain that erection. Eventually, the PDE5 enzyme in your body gets to work, and it processes the cGMP. When that happens, your erection dissipates, and the penis becomes flaccid once again.
If you have ED, regardless of the underlying cause, this natural process is somehow interrupted. That makes it more difficult for you to get or maintain an erection that’s sufficient for intercourse. And that’s where Tadalafil, a PDE5 inhibitor, can help. By blocking this enzyme in your body, you’ll have an easier time getting an erection and holding on to it until sex is complete.
As we mentioned earlier, ED can be caused by various factors, so it’s important to discuss all your medical history with your doctor before starting treatment with Tadalafil. This is so that you can determine if it’s the right medication for you, that you can have an ED treatment with. In addition to medical conditions such as blood pressure and diabetes, you may also have conditions that affect your blood flow, such as high blood counts or those taking nitrates or “poppers”.
If you’re taking any medications, including some popular CYP3A4 inhibitors, ensuring that you’re taking only the medications that are most effective in your system (such as ketoconazole and erythromycin) might also affect your treatment with Tadalafil. Therefore, it’s crucial to discuss all the medications you’re taking with your doctor to ensure that they’re the right options for you.
If you’re taking medications to manage your blood pressure or kidney problems, such as riociguat, you may also need to be started at a lower dose to achieve an effective treatment. In that case, taking Tadalafil at a lower dose might not be as effective as taking the medication at the top of the drug list to achieve an effective treatment.
If you’re taking any of the medications mentioned above, it’s possible that your body is not completely blocked from getting blood to your penis, which could further compromise an erection. Therefore, it’s crucial to talk to your doctor about all the medications you’re taking to ensure that they’re the right options for you.
If you have any specific conditions or allergies, it’s best to avoid PDE5 inhibitors because they can potentially interact with those medications. In those situations, Tadalafil might be recommended if you’re at a higher risk for developing ED.
Before we get too much into the effectiveness of Tadalafil, we need to talk about some of the other things that Tadalafil can do.
Now that we have explained how erections occur, let’s talk about what Tadalafil can do for you.
When you become sexually aroused, a substance called nitric oxide (NO) is released in your body, which activates the enzyme guanylate cyclase (GC). That enzyme is responsible for relaxing the muscles on the sides of your penis, which allow blood to flow into the organ of your penis. That’s where cGMP comes in.
So how do you get an erection? Well, first of all, you have to be aroused.
If you’re not sure, you can get up from a sitting or lying position and have a spontaneous sex. That’s the first option that is most effective.
If you do not have an erection for this reason, you can get up and about it in a non-judgemental manner. That way, you won’t feel rushed or stressed at sex. That’s also the second option that is most effective.
Tadalafil belongs to the group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE 5) inhibitors, primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Erectile dysfunction is the inability to keep a hard and erect penis suitable for sexual activity. Benign prostatic hyperplasia, also called prostate enlargement, is the non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland.
Tadalafil contains ‘Tadalafil’, which works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis; this allows the blood to flow into the penis when the person is sexually excited. Thereby, it helps to treat erectile dysfunction. Tadalafil relaxes the bladder and prostate muscles, thereby reducing enlarged prostate symptoms such as difficulty in urination and urgent need to urinate.
You are advised to take Tadalafil for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects, such as headache, back pain, muscle pain, pain in the legs and arms, nasal congestion, indigestion, and facial flushing. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.
Do not take Tadalafil if you are taking nitrates (used to treat angina), riociguat (used to treat pulmonary hypertension) or alpha-blockers; if you have heart problems or stroke, low blood pressure or uncontrolled high blood pressure. Tadalafil is not intended for use in women. Tadalafil may cause dizziness, so drive with caution. Avoid consuming alcohol as it might cause increased dizziness. Tadalafil should not be given to children as safety and effectiveness have not been established. Keep your doctor informed about your health condition and the medicines you are taking to avoid unpleasant side effects.
Read the Patient Information Leaflet if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines. Tadalafil should not be used in combination with other treatment for erectile dysfunction as this may result in an extended QT interval and an increased risk of torsades de pointes (QT prolongation). This may lead toydia (caused by Vienna hilalia toxinA gene) infections, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and pulmonary hypertension. If you are taking nitrates (including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors) or amyloid precursor protein (AAP) inhibitors, you may experience the symptoms of heart attack or stroke. This may be connected with Tadalafil's effects on heart health, including increased heart rate, irregular heartbeat and prolonged dizziness. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines as it could be that you are experiencing any of these:You are advised to avoid swallowed wholenant amount of Tadalafil as it may not be appropriate for you. Take your doctor's note before taking this medicine if you: are taking any other group of medicines, including oral medicines, intravenous medicines, cerebral or spinal fluid medicines, herbal medicines, vitamin supplements, oral contraceptives, diuretics or antibiotics, painkillers, antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors, antibiotics or antivirals, HIV medicine, urinary tract infection medicine or other medicines that treat erectile dysfunction, or medicines that may interact with Tadalafil. This may cause side effects such as sexual problems, changes in the amount of urine, increased need to urinate or airway problems, a sensation of tightness in the chest or a feeling that the muscles are muscles that are not supposed to be there, headache and dizziness.
Whether you can take Tadalafil at the same time as your other medications will depend on which medications you are taking.
You are required to complete a short medical consultation questionnaire that asks for any medications that you are prescribed from your GP and will indicate the medications that can’t be taken alongside Tadalafil.
There are several medicines which should not be taken concurrently with Tadalafil. Medicines which can have potentially serious interactions with Tadalafil include :-
• Any alpha-blocker medicines e.g. doxazosin (Cardura), alfuzosin (Xatral), tamsulosin, terazosin, or Flomax, that you can buy in the pharmacy. (These medicines may be used to treat prostate problems or high blood pressure).
• Isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, or use a GTN spray or tablets
for chest pain or use Rectogesic ointment?
• Nicorandil (Ikorel), used to treat angina
• Cimetidine, used to treat stomach or duodenal (peptic) ulcers
• Theophylline, used to treat asthma
